BIO

Athimalaipet Ramanan is Consultant Paediatric Rheumatologist at the University of Bristol. He is a globally renowned paediatric clinical researcher. His work with arthritis associated uveitis led to use of Adalimumab for children with this condition. Overall, 79 countries including the US have approved this treatment on the basis of his work. This has led to WHO including Adalimumab in the essential medicines list for arthritis and uveitis in children in low- and middle-income countries. He has been working on “cytokine storm syndrome” associated with viral infections such as dengue for 10 years and contributed to the understanding of the COVID-19 associated cytokine storm in adults and children. He has also engaged with industry, regulators and academia to help design trials in rare diseases in children including adapting trials during pandemic times.
