BIO

Professor Richard Mawuena Kofi Adanu is a distinguished obstetrician–gynecologist and public health scientist from Ghana, with an extensive career spanning clinical practice, academic leadership, and global health research. He trained in medicine at the University of Ghana Medical School and completed postgraduate specialist training in obstetrics and gynecology. Professor Adanu further obtained a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health as a Gates Scholar, where he was inducted into the Delta Omega Public Health Honor Society.
He serves as Rector of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he oversees postgraduate medical education and professional training across clinical disciplines. As Professor of Women’s Reproductive Health at the University of Ghana School of Public Health, he combines clinical expertise with epidemiological research to address critical issues in maternal and reproductive health. His work includes efforts to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality, improve family planning services, enhance cervical cancer screening uptake, and understand the epidemiology of obstetric and gynecological conditions in Ghana and sub-Saharan Africa.
In addition to academic teaching and clinical service, Professor Adanu has held leadership roles including Dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Ghana and Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics. He has mentored a generation of clinicians and researchers and collaborated internationally on women’s health, reproductive epidemiology, and health systems strengthening initiatives.
